Nigerian Abstract Oil Painters: Nigerian contemporary abstract oil painting has its roots in traditional art and craftworks and its identity and strength from the development of three key artist colonies or workshops - Oshogbo/Mbari, Zaria and Nsukka.

Oshogbo/Mbari: The Oshogbo Workshop began in the early 1960's with a group of artists who combined traditional Nigerian and African forms and techniques with modern artistic influences. Zaria Group: The Zaria Group or Art Society, aka the Zaria Rebels, was formed in 1958 when Uche Okeke, an art student at the Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria and other students tried to structure a new approach to art by moving beyond the Eurocentric art academic curriculum. Nsukka Group: The Nsukka Group adopted the traditional practice of painting uli on bodies and walls because of its designs and approach to compositional style. This aesthetic and style involved the use of modern art media - from pens, gouache to oil paints. The Nuskka Group were mostly artists involved with the art program of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
